ELECTRIC VS. GAS CARS: IS IT CHEAPER TO DRIVE AN EV?

With electric vehicles taking over the industry, many Canadians are asking themselves if it is worth making the switch. And here at Dueck Chevrolet Buick Cadillac GMC, we are here to say it is! With federal and provincial rebates lowering the initial purchase cost, the lower cost of ownership means that EVs aren’t just a great solution to fight climate change; they are also more economical in the long run. Continue reading as we explore other cost savings EV owners enjoy.

LOWER GAS COSTS

Clean Energy Canada recently studied the fuel cost savings versus the increased BC Hydro payments. Their study assumed eight years of ownership and an average mileage of 20,000 kilometres per year. In nearly every electric-to-gas-model comparison, the EV had a much lower cost of ownership. With above-average gas prices, and in cases where you drive more than 20,000 kilometres per year, the savings are even more significant.

LOWER MAINTENANCE COSTS

In addition to significant savings in fuel costs, EVs also cost much less to maintain. Not only will you never need to schedule an oil change again, but other wearable components, like the brakes, require less frequent maintenance because of their technology.

LOWER TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP

When you factor in the initial cost of the vehicle, taxes, insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs, owning a gas-powered vehicle with today’s average gas prices can be up to 48 percent more expensive per kilometre driven than owning an EV, saving owners thousands of dollars over the course of ownership.
